Last week, I talked about the importance of pausing. A pause allows my spirit to calm and reflect the heavens above.
The pause also allows me to Think Things Through.
One day, after my wife had instructed me to do something with a didactic tone in her voice. I said, “Sometimes, when you tell me things, it sounds like you think I am stupid.”
She was shocked and immediately replied, “Gosh, no, I am sorry if I gave that impression. I have never thought you were stupid, never; you just don’t think things through.”
I pointed out to her that the difference between being stupid and not Thinking Things Through was not immediately clear, but I took her advice seriously and started to develop the habit of Thinking Things Through. The first thing I learned was that Thinking Something Through requires a pause. If I act immediately on an intuition, I am not Thinking Things Through. If I am reacting, I am not Thinking Things Through. I need to pause to Think Things Through.
Unfortunately, there are no positive guarantees, only negative ones. Pausing doesn’t guarantee I will think things through, but not pausing guarantees I will never think things through.
So, when I remember to pause, there is less chance of receiving further instructions from my beloved wife.
