A Chance Encounter at an AA Meeting
While visiting the US and attending AA meetings, I came across an interesting license plate. It was from New Hampshire. Like most states and provinces, New Hampshire displays a motto on its license plates.
As I walked by the car from New Hampshire, I thought, “How appropriate for an AA meeting, ‘Live Free Or Die’; it could be a good AA motto.”
What “Live Free or Die” Means in Alcohol Recovery
We alcoholics must live free or die; we must live free of our addiction, or we die, and it is an ugly death.
Addiction can lead to devastating outcomes, including:
- Car accidents, sometimes harming or killing others as well as ourselves
- Severe brain injury, including Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
- Internal bleeding, including esophageal bleeding and catastrophic physical decline
- Suicide by pills, carbon dioxide, guns, or other means
Recovery is not a vague idea. For many of us, it is a life-or-death necessity.
AA Fellowship, Unity, and the Hope of Psychic Change
The New Hampshire State Herald or Crest displays an ancient ship, with 8 oars all working together, which put me in mind of AA’s Fellowship.
It made me think of:
- Men and women working together
- A shared destination
- The possibility of psychic change
- The rising sun as a symbol of hope
Behind the ship is a rising sun, with rays of hope. That image captures something essential in Alcoholics Anonymous: no one has to row alone.
Maybe we should label New Hampshire as the AA State.
