How to Turn Recovery Knowledge Into Life-Changing Habits

three monkeys hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil

Information to application to transformation.”

The Rule of Three is a rhetorical technique that makes an idea more effective and memorable. We respond to “threes” in a special way:

  • We remember things listed in threes better.
  • We frequently use sets of three.
  • We enjoy word patterns built around three.

Triplets are good.

The classic triplet example is the image of the three monkeys seeing no evil, hearing no evil, and speaking no evil.

Why the Rule of Three Is So Memorable

The formal grammatical name for a word triplet is a tricolon: three parallel words or phrases.

Often, the three parallel words or phrases are progressive, as in:

Information to application to transformation.

The best tricolons may also use words that are similar in length and sound. Notice the alliteration and rhythm of this triplet:

  • Information
  • Application
  • Transformation

It is a classic tricolon.

This is a great turn of phrase because it is both memorable and effective.

It is a bonus that it is true.

That was my experience in coming to practice the 12 Steps, principles, and ideas in all my affairs by following the blueprint for the Design for Living that our Program outlines.

Application: From AA Knowledge to Daily Recovery Practice

First, I gathered the information. I:

  • Read books
  • Attended meetings
  • Talked with other AAs
  • Learned how to do an inventory
  • Learned how to pray and meditate
  • Learned how to carry the message

I learned more and more about the mechanics of recovery. But the information only took me so far.

To reach the next level of spiritual growth, I had to apply what I had learned. I had to bake the habits into my life.

I had to apply the information.

How Recovery Principles Create Personal Transformation

With the application of the information came transformation.

As many wise people have observed:

Thoughts breed actions, actions breed habits, and habits breed character.

The transformation was not in my circumstances or conditions. It was in me.

It went to my character, and my character changed.

So the tricolon, “information to application to transformation,” is a great and memorable rhetorical flourish that I can use with newcomers and apply to myself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “information to application to transformation” mean?

It means that learning recovery principles is only the beginning. Those principles must be practised consistently before they can produce meaningful personal and spiritual change.

Why is information alone not enough for addiction recovery?

Information can explain what to do, but lasting recovery depends on action. Reading, attending meetings, and listening to others are valuable, but the principles must become part of daily life.

How do the 12 Steps support personal transformation?

The 12 Steps encourage honest self-examination, spiritual practice, repairing relationships, helping others, and applying recovery principles in everyday situations. Over time, these actions can reshape habits and character.

What is a tricolon?

A tricolon is a rhetorical structure made up of three parallel words, phrases, or ideas. “Information to application to transformation” is a tricolon because it presents three connected and progressive stages.

Why are groups of three memorable?

Three-part patterns create rhythm, balance, and progression. They are often easier to understand and remember than longer or less structured lists.

How can I apply recovery information in daily life?

Application may include completing an inventory, praying or meditating, attending meetings, speaking with other people in recovery, making amends, helping newcomers, and practising spiritual principles in everyday decisions.

What kind of transformation can recovery produce?

Transformation does not always mean that external circumstances immediately change. It may appear as greater honesty, patience, courage, responsibility, humility, compassion, and emotional stability.

Can addiction recovery books help with the application of the 12 Steps?

Yes. Recovery books can explain principles, provide personal insights, and offer practical guidance. Their greatest value is realized when readers reflect on the material and put it into practice.
