What We Usually Call Power
“Real power is not caring what someone thinks about you.”
Weightlifters have physical power.
Batteries store electrical power.
Power is the ability to command or compel.
Some familiar forms of power include:
- a general with power over an army,
- a judge with power over the accused,
- a CEO with power over an enterprise.
These are powers of authority: the ability to direct, decide, or dictate.
Authority, Tools, Leverage, and Persuasion
A soldier holds power through a cannon; an officer through a sidearm. These are powers derived from tools.
A clever advertisement triggers behaviour. A charismatic speaker commands a room. These are powers of attraction and persuasion.
In negotiations, power stems from leverage: the party with greater strength dictates the terms.
The Quiet Power of Radical Acceptance
The aphorism “Real power is not caring what someone thinks about you” fits none of these.
It is a quiet, still power. It does not rely on:
- imbalance,
- coercion,
- charm,
- force,
- authority,
- or leverage.
With this power, you can weather the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. You wear life like a loose garment, grounded in radical acceptance and peace, come what may.
It is not a power used to fight or resist, but to render external judgment inert.
It is not turning a blind eye to how others view you. It is acknowledging their perception and remaining entirely unbothered.
That is real power.
That is true sovereignty.

FAQ
What does real power mean in this reflection?
Real power means the quiet inner freedom of not being ruled by other people’s opinions. It is not force, authority, charm, or leverage.
Is not caring what people think the same as ignoring everyone?
No. The reflection describes acknowledging how others see you while remaining unbothered by their judgment.
How does radical acceptance relate to real power?
Radical acceptance helps make external judgment less powerful. It allows a person to stay grounded and peaceful without needing to control what others think.
Why is this kind of power different from authority or persuasion?
Authority and persuasion depend on influence over others. This kind of power is internal. It does not require imbalance, coercion, or control.
What does true sovereignty mean here?
True sovereignty means living from inner steadiness rather than being governed by fear, approval, criticism, or other people’s perceptions.
