Meet My Future Wife

We have a Morning Huddle AA meeting three days a week. Six AAs, we review our day ahead; share our plans, prayers and hopes for the day.

One of our members is a good AA friend. He was divorced and he must have been feeling lonely one morning.

In a lighthearted moment, he said, “I miss being married. Today, I am going to pray that I meet my future wife.”

One of the other AA brothers in the meeting cautioned him, “Be careful what you pray for. You don’t want just any woman. You might get someone like your last wife, and that did not end well. If you are going to ask for something as important as a wife, you better be specific; you should ask for a good wife.”

Picking up the theme, another AA brother chimed in, “good point, but why stop there? Since you are talking to God, be very specific, ask for a rich, pleasant, and good-looking wife.”

Not wanting to be left out, a third AA brother weighed in, “Well, one thing is becoming clear from this conversation, even the simplest request can get complicated very quickly. Maybe you should leave it to God and simply ask for His direction; pray for the wife that God would have you marry.”

It was a humorous interlude, one of the advantages of a small meeting and bantering cross talk.

Later my friend called. “You know,” he said, “that exchange was more powerful than I had realized. I should be careful what I wish for; I sometimes forget that God and the universe are always listening and will take me at my word.”
