Resources

Need some extra help? Looking for services or resource links? Here are some of the providers and websites that Andy C recommends:

Fresh Start Recovery Center

Fresh Start Recovery Centre’s (FSRC) addiction treatment program follows the disease concept: They see addiction as an illness that is progressive and often fatal if left untreated. The good news is that with treatment and a program of recovery, people can and DO live healthy, happy and productive lives. That has been their focus for the last 29 years as they provide solutions which support people moving forward into long-term recovery. With treatment locations in both Calgary (men only) and Lethbridge (men and women) they are seen as a treatment leader not only in Calgary and area, but are recognized across Canada for their interdisciplinary approach they take to treat addiction. Their entire focus is on a recovery solution that is real, attainable and sustainable. Along with the two treatment centers, they have 46 post-treatment housing beds in two apartments in Calgary. Post-treatment housing clients are provided weekly check-ins with an outreach counsellor, peer support and are part of a strong alumni network. In all of their work, they remain constant to their core values: equality, empathy, trust, accountability, support, change, respect and individuality.

Bicycle Health

I know nothing of this program, but it seems to be aimed at drug supported recovery.  I have no knowledge of drug-based recovery regimes and have my doubts.  It does not seem to me that replacing one stimulant with another is a great solution, it might be a good bridge, but not a solution.

Based on my experience and observation a spiritual or psychic change is required, this group does not highlight this aspect of recovery.  But maybe they have something.  For some this might be a solution.

Two Way Prayer

Father Bill W of Austin, Texas, is a student of the origins of the Oxford Group of Alcoholics Anonymous, focusing on what he calls Two Way Prayer.  The Oxford Group called this practice ‘Guidance.’

Anne Smith was a Guidance champion.  She and Dr. Bob were Guidance enthusiasts, and all the AA founders practiced Guidance regularly.  Dr. Bob would not spend time with a newcomer if he believed that the newcomer would not commit to daily Guidance sessions.  In later years, Bill Wilson decried the loss of prayer and meditation—Guidance—from its former place of importance.

Father Bill W is turning this around, returning Twelve Step practitioners to the original Guidance roots of the Oxford Group.

His website, with podcasts, essays, and workbooks, is an important resource in this restoration project.  After hearing Father Bill W in the workshops on the website and reading his materials found on the website, we have become avid Guidancers (if that is a proper word), and we encourage all the4thdimension.ca users to dive into Father Bill W’s materials.  You will find a gold mine of spiritual practice.
