Complacency is worse than resentment (Part 2)

Last week I shared a series of “Hey Martha” factoids about patients not following medically prescribed treatment protocols, comparing those problems to our Program experience with Complacency in AA.  Medical experts called it ‘Adherence.’ We call it, ‘Staying with the Program.’

Complacency is a problem for both the medical profession and AA.

The similarities between patients not following protocols and AAs losing touch with the Program were interesting enough, but there was more.  A more exciting insight was the discussion of solutions to improve Adherence, or patients following through on treatments, and comparing those solutions to our own AA Program.

Medical experts, seeing the problem, have studied solutions.  Understanding the importance of Adherence, or complacency prevention, they have researched, tested, and reviewed ways to combat the problem.  And, with each answer, I could see a parallel in our AA Program.

Medical experts said that Adherence increased with frequent communication with health care providers; I thought about AAs regular contact with sponsors and going to meetings to fight Complacency.

Adherence will increase if Doctors keep in touch with patients with simple phone calls from a nurse; I thought about how in AA, we teach newcomers to use their phones, to call three AAs every day.

Doctors and nurses can improve Adherence with regular two-way communication; I thought about our Fellowship and how much we talk amongst ourselves, again, to prevent Complacency.

Medical people have solutions to the problem of Adherence.  We in AA have answers to the problem of Complacency.

What have I learned?  Alcoholics are not unique; we are Complacent.
