Step 2 promises sanity, not abstinence.
If our Program of Recovery were limited to not drinking, focusing only on abstinence, it would still be a fine Program.
Not drinking, for alcoholics of my type, is a very good thing and a great improvement. But our Program promises much more than abstinence.
The Promise of Step 2 in Addiction Recovery
Step #2 signals those broader promises. Not satisfied with mere abstinence, worthy as that is, Step #2 promises sanity:
- sound thinking
- sound perception
- clarity about life
- a better way of responding to the world
This is much more than drinking.
Thinking and perception touch every aspect of our lives. Our mental life is what we perceive, and how we think about it, which governs our actions, forms our habits, and makes our character.
This means our whole life is affected by a return to sanity.
Let us turn to sound perceptions and sound thinking.
Sound Perception: Seeing Life More Clearly
First, perception.
Our perceptions become sound. That idea encompasses a number of qualities.
We see ideas, things, and people more clearly. We don’t deceive ourselves with false perceptions of the world and what it is doing.
The convergence of clarity and honesty makes our perceptions more accurate; we see the world as it is, or at least closer to it.
Clarity, honesty, and accuracy become the hallmarks of our perceptions.
Sound Thinking: Logic, Poise, and Recovery
Second, thinking.
Our thinking becomes sound. This includes logic and reasoning: we reach logical conclusions and reason more effectively.
Our thinking is not clouded with anger or resentment; it is sound, balanced and rational.
Without the emotional turmoil, we take surprises, bad news or other difficulties in stride and address them with mental poise and equanimity.
Logic, rationality, and poise become the hallmarks of our thinking.
This is the promise of Step 2: a return to soundness in life, sanity.
This is way more than abstinence.
And we get all of this by completing the remaining Steps.
