We were hiking on a hot day. It had been a long walk, and we were exhausted. Sitting on a bench near a lake, not a breath of air. I looked at the lake’s surface; in the mirror-like reflection, I could see the sky above.
The calm water allowed a perfect reflection of the heavens above.
The thought occurred to me: this water is like my soul. When calm, clean and clear, it reflects the heavens above perfectly. But if it is disturbed, the reflection will not be so clear.
When calm, clean and clear, my soul reflects the heavens above. But if my soul is disturbed, maybe I have amends to make or have not meditated that morning. These detract from the calm, clean and clear state of my soul. The reflection of the heavens in my soul will not be so clear.
My wife sat down beside me, and I explained all this to her. She seemed to grasp the idea quickly. Either that or she was tired and being agreeable to get me moving.
