Last week, I wrote about the power of the word “the” in Step 12. This week, let’s explore another small but significant word: “a.”
We are promised a spiritual awakening as the result of the Twelve Steps.
But here’s what I’ve come to understand:
“A” Spiritual Awakening Opens the Door to “Another”
Every time I work through the Steps, I experience a spiritual awakening. And if I can have one spiritual awakening, then I can have “a-nother.”
In my experience, practicing the principles embedded in the Twelve Steps leads to a series of spiritual awakenings that follow one another. This, for me, is spiritual progress.
Each awakening brings a greater spiritual conscious awareness of my Higher Power. At times, it feels as though the presence of God enchants the whole world.
From Awakening to Slumber—and Back Again
Naturally, there are other occasions. If I can experience a spiritual awakening, I can also enjoy spiritual slumber.
When I am spiritually asleep, the world does not seem as enchanting, and my conscious awareness of God is neither conscious nor aware.
But this, too, is part of the journey. And I return to the promise in Step 12:
If I follow these Steps and apply the principles, I will experience another spiritual awakening.
And like rising from a Sunday afternoon nap, I awake, spiritually refreshed and renewed.
Spiritual Renewal Through Continuous Practice
Through continued practice of the Twelve Steps, spiritual awakenings keep occurring—just as the program promises. Each time I rise again from a spiritual nap, I awaken refreshed and renewed.
This, for me, is true spiritual progress.
