A young lawyer and his mentor were enjoying their regular lunch. The older lawyer, a senior partner in the firm, liked the sense of well-being he got from passing his wisdom on to this young man. The young man had, over the years, gained much from the relationship in terms of contacts, knowledge, and confidence.

Slow Learner and Fast Forgetter
I was wondering, why we read “How It Works” at every meeting.
Years ago, an AA history speaker told the story of how that habit came to be; there was a woman in California whose husband was a terrible drunk. She knew of some other women who were similarly blessed with alcoholic husbands.
Hit every rock, shoal, and reef, sometimes twice
I grew up on Lake Superior, and sailing was our family activity during the summer. Dad bought his first keelboat when I was 11 years old, and family cruises on the Great Lakes were frequent.
From Chaos to Control
My first words in the Program were, “My name is Andy…and I am here.”
An old timer asked, “So why are you here?”
“I think that I have a potential problem with drinking. I am having some problems and think that I should stop. But my life is under control. No one knows that I have a drinking problem. All my drinking friends are kept is separate compartments and don’t know each other. If they all got together, they would see that I have a drinking problem. But my life is not unmanageable. I am in third-year law school, and doing well other than my drinking.”
Is there more to life?
Chris L. and I have started working together in Victoria. In our first session, he said: “there is more to my life than me.”
Wow, what a great thought. And Chris has about 60 days in the program; out of the mouths of babes!
It is difficult to learn something when you know it all
So true is the statement. So often I walk into meetings in business, conversations with friends, and prayers with God ‘knowing it all.’ There is no room to listen, much less learn. I already know it all.
