Acronyms are so much fun, and handy to have around.
They are memory aids for sound principles of living. And the best are the ones that you have right at hand, in case of an emergency.
P.U.S.H.
Pause Until Something Happens is an excellent example of a handy acronym.
You should keep it nearby in case of an emergency. Next time you are in trouble, P.U.S.H.
Often, in a crisis, we dig the hole deeper. As the Saskatchewan farmer is wont to say, “if you are in a hole and want to get out, first stop digging.” Pushing against the problem, digging the hole deeper, may make things more difficult. When I P.U.S.H., I stop. If I P.U.S.H. with a problem, instead of pushing against a problem, I quit. And I wait until something happens. I will not dig the hole deeper.
Years ago, I was working with a sponsee. He arrived, heated, from a confrontation with another driver. They had almost come to blows on the sidewalk beside his car. We talked about it.
As we talked about the incident, I agreed with my sponsee when he said, “this would have worked better if, when he started yelling at me, I had asked myself, why is he so upset?”
I remembered having an insight that I shared with him; I followed up by observing, “curiosity is a great starting point in an angry conversation. Ask yourself, “Why is this happening?” and watch the results.”
If I P.U.S.H., I immediately adopt a stance of curiosity, asking in my spirit, “what is going to happen next?” And that is a great place to be; it means that I am open to reality and whatever comes next, I am halfway to acceptance.
Pause Until Something Happens.
Could it get any better? Yes, it could. And if I am on the beam, I can turn to God and Pray Until Something Happens. Include Prayer in the Pause. There is nothing better than turning to God in a crisis, guaranteed; things will go better.
P.U.S.H. Pray or pause, they both work well.
