Twelve step workout

Before I came to the Program and began working the steps, my spiritual legs had atrophied.

There were two reasons, both of which are addressed by the Program of AA.

First, I was lazy.  I did not want to grow and mature spiritually.  So, I avoided problems and certainly worked to avoid solutions that might involve serious work and thought; or worse yet, prayer and meditation.

Secondly, I had a pair of crutches.  I had booze, which supported me and avoided me having to put any weight on my spiritual legs.  Later of course, as my consumption of booze increased, I graduated from spiritual crutches to a spiritual wheelchair.

Bottom line: my legs did not bear much weight and certainly were not exercised.

Then I stopped drinking, I got up from the wheelchair and forsook my crutches.  I had to walk around unaided.  The spiritual muscles were sore, but grew in strength.  Then I started to work the steps, and the spiritual muscles of my spiritual legs grew stronger, like my real legs did, with a good work out.

So now, I am blessed with a pair of legs that can carry me around.
