When I am dancing and I change my rhythm, my partner will change as well. Maybe not right away, but soon.
The world and the people in it are my dancing partners in life.
When I am going through life and I change my thinking, the people around me change as well. Maybe not right away, but soon.
That is the lesson I have learned from prayer and meditation — practicing Step Eleven changes my thinking.
When I pray, I orient my mind to God, my Higher Power. That change in orientation alters my perceptions and attitudes. That changes how I respond to the world and that in turn, changes how the world responds to me.
When I meditate, I focus. I might concentrate on breathing, a spiritual reading, life, or whatever. In focusing, I choose what is in my mind. I practice choosing what to think. Instead of random thoughts crossing my mind, I choose what to think about. This discipline can carry through the day.
If I choose to think angry thoughts, the world around me will be fierce. If I decide to drive my car with aggression, the other drivers seem to sense it and drive aggressively as well. If I choose to think thoughts of gratitude, the world seems to be grateful to have me around.
Prayer and meditation are like dancing. When I choose what to think – the world around me changes. Maybe not right away, but soon. When I pray, I choose to think about God – and the world around me changes for the better. Maybe not right away, but soon.
With step eleven, I learn new dance steps with life.
